The Right Rug
When you are considering buying a rug, you need to decide where you want to place it and measure the area to be covered. Depending on which room it is intended for, try to decide on the colours and atmosphere you need it to blend with. Lastly, choose a wool rug for long life and hard wear and a cotton one for easy cleaning and usually a lower price.

Handmade rugs are usually better made and longer lasting. Softer colours in the wool rugs tend to create an atmosphere of antiquity and tradition, whereas the brighter colours of the cotton rugs are cheerful and fun to live with.
There are many different styles of rugs. Authentic Oriental rugs are made by hand in countries such as Turkey and India. Persia being the original name for Iran, this is where such rugs are still made. Some itinerant rug weavers left Iran centuries ago and settled on the plains of India. Today their descendants hand weave rugs to the same designs and with the same skill.
These rugs are an excellent investment, creating elegance in your home and lasting for so long that you should be sure you have someone special to leave them to.
Rugs can be placed over existing fitted carpet or laid directly onto hard floors, such as wood or stone. It is advisable to use special grippers under the rugs (which can be bought from carpet or hardware shops) so that they do not move. This will prevent anyone slipping on them. Consider the reason you are purchasing a rug.
Is it to add interest to the room? If so, choose two or three main colours of the room and find a rug which echoes these. If the rest of the room is already full of pattern, choose a simple rug which is not too busy. If the room is fairly plain, then you can choose whichever design of rug pleases you.
Is it to add warmth to the room? If so, choose slightly darker, warmer colours in more intricate and dense patterns, which will lend a cosier atmosphere to the room. A large rug which covers most of the floor will ensure a minimum of draughts and greater comfort.
