How to choose the perfect Coffee Table
If you have found yourself carefully sourcing various pieces for your living room and when it comes to the coffee table, you are unsure – do not despair, you are far from alone.
Coffee tables can be a real challenge because they are focal and central to the composition of the scheme you are creating and therefore vitally important when decorating your home. It seems finding the ideal living room armchairs, sofa and side tables is the easy part but when it comes to choosing a coffee table that complements all the other pieces, suddenly the coffee table becomes elusive to track down.
To feel confident and convinced that you have made the right choice, you need to go back to the basics and look at colour themes in the room, the style and mood you are achieving, the shape, size and material that you require and the purpose of the coffee table.
What is this coffee table going to be used for? More than just cups of coffee.
So, think about its functions, you may use it for eating meals from, while you watch television or a film; when you entertain you may want to have a drinks tray and enough room for snacks or just show it off and create a ‘tablescape’ – a collection of interesting ornamental objects artfully arranged and storage for books, magazines and TV controls and general every day clutter can be contained in drawers and lower shelves. You can put your feet up with a typical coffee table – just add a cushion under your feet, I do not suggest an ottoman-style coffee table. It is not very practical because nothing that you put on the surface is level, even with the use of a tray. If you want to literally put your feet up, level with the sofa and armchair then purchase a footstool. A few ‘must nots’ are - I don’t suggest that you choose a coffee table with rattan because it is not rigid and the material unravels easily and coffee tables with solid bases can be restrictive and uncomfortable.
The choice of a coffee table is personal – it needs to fulfill all your requirements, it has to be a piece of furniture that you genuinely like because you will spend a lot of time around it. It is said that the coffee table is as important a decision as your office desk and dining table. Be inspired, by visiting BTCbyDESIGN’s: ‘Designer Roomsets’ section.
