The Frame is the skeleton of the chair and should be made of hardwood with a mixture of softwood for long life durability.
The Support is the springing or webbing attached to the wooden frame which will withstand the constant impact of someone sitting down during the life of the furniture.
The Padding can be made of foam, feather or polyester fibre. This is covered by a lining cloth and then the more expensive main decorative fabric. This creates a platform onto which separate upholstered cushions are sometimes placed.
Domestic upholstered furniture must meet Fire Safety standards and this is indicated by the ticket displayed on the label which may be located on the underside of the cushion or the item itself.
When buying large pieces of furniture, such as an armchair, be sure that you have not only measured the space it will occupy but also that you can get the item into the chosen room.
Proper care and maintenance will prolong the life of your chair. It is recommended that you follow these simple suggestions:
• Lightly vacuum upholstery once a week.
• Regularly turn the cushions on constantly used upholstery. This will prevent excessive soiling and uneven wear.
• Smooth out creases in the cushions to prevent them becoming permanent and causing early wear.
• Don't sit on the arms.
• Avoid continuous wear on small areas of the fabric, such as arms and front edges of cushions.
• Avoid snagging the fabric with sharp objects.
• Use a professional upholstery cleaner. We recommend at least once a year.
• If accidental spillage or damage occurs, take professional advice to ensure it is dealt with properly.
• Trim loose threads, don't pull them
• Avoid direct sunlight and/or heat for long periods of time as this may result in fading. Draw curtains and blinds wherever possible.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning. Do not clean/wash just one part of the upholstery as this may create a different colour from the rest when dry.
A good quality armchair should last a lifetime – and sometimes beyond, Georgian wingchairs are still going strong and wonderfully comfortable. Your chosen armchair should be an investment for your enjoyment and for the pleasure of generations to come.
