DESIGN GUIDE FOR ARMCHAIRS - PAGE 2

  The Valbonne Chair

The comfort of a chair depends on the angles employed in the frame and the type and method of covering. Padding distributes the weight by increasing the area of contact between the chair and the body. A hard wood chair feels hard because the contact point between the occupant and the chair is small. The same body weight over a smaller area means greater pressure on that area. Spreading the area reduces the pressure at any given point. In lieu of padding, flexible materials, such as wicker, may be used instead with similar effects of distributing the weight. Since most of the body weight is supported in the back of the seat, padding there should be firmer than the front of the seat which only has the weight of the legs to support. Chairs that have padding that is the same density front and back will feel soft in the back. Mass produced chairs are typically 17 inches high and 15-17 inches deep.

The best pieces will provide comfort, simplicity and durability. For armchairs which will be used regularly in a living area, choose a solid frame with good padding and a covering which will be easy to keep clean. The padding of seats these days are made of foams that are both soft and resistant Feathers can also be mixed with the foams.
When selecting an armchair, consider the level of comfort and the use you will require. Do you want to watch TV from it? Do you want to read or sew in it? Do you want to rest with your head back?

The Valbonne ChairWhen choosing the style of the armchair most people select a chair to complement, rather than match the sofa. It is better to choose a contrast in style or colour, otherwise the result will be too much. If the sofa is light in style then you can choose a stronger style for the chair. If you ensure that the shape is classic, you can always update the chair with a change of upholstery.
