The Lure of Lacquer

In this Hall we have placed a striking lacquer red console, flanked by Chinese style chairs in charcoal, also in lacquer. The lamps, carved in wood and painted grey, imitate stone and reflect the real stone carved Buddha. The ‘antique silvered’ metal mirror lightens the whole and the regimented horses parade beneath.

This is a narrow space which we have visually widened by placing a long simple table across the wall, flanked by chairs at either end. By using a number of horses in a straight line, we have emphasized this deception. Where spaces are narrow, create width with transverse lines.
